Biographical history

Ruben Nathaniel Smith, 1870-1957, was born in London, England, the son of William Smith and Lydia Collins, and immigrated with his parents to Ontario in 1874. In 1886 he moved to Calgary. He married Jane Sarah Murray, 1878-1949, who was born in Sturgeon Creek, Manitoba, daughter of Alexander and Mary Ann Murray. She came to Calgary with her family in 1886 as well. They had seven children: Myrtle Olive, 1903-1903, Harold Albert, Elva (Maley, later Dunkley, later Underdown), 1913-1978, William Alexander, 1899-1961, George Lloyd, 1920-2000 (changed name to Rodway in 1957), Gerald, 1907-1970, and Edward, 1915-?.

George Rodway married Winnifred "Wynne" Maude "Margaret" Watts, 1919-2002, daughter of Frank Wetherall and Ellen Elizabeth Bruce Watts. They had two children, Lanell Heather, 1949-, and Murray Frank, 1950-. Lynell married David Kinzer, 1947-, and they had two children, Andrea Jane, 1972- and Paul David Nicholas, 1977-.

Ruben established City Cartage in Calgary but worked in a foundry in Toronto from 1906 to 1909. On his return he operated Smith Brothers Concrete and Excavation with two of his brothers. Smith later worked as a machinist's helper at Riverside Iron Works / Dominion Bridge until he retired in 1941. Ruben Smith was a member of the Southern Alberta Pioneers and Oldtimers' Association. George Rodway worked for the post office throughout his life, except for service overseas during the Second World War when he was the driver for Georges Vanier. Frank Watts worked for Calgary Transit throughout his career.
