Biographical history

The Young Women's Benevolent Society was founded in Calgary, Alberta in 1910 by a group of women at the Anglican Church of the Redeemer. Its aim was to aid "distressed gentlewomen". Mrs. J.H. Woods was the first president. The name was changed to the Samaritan Club in 1916. In 1935 the Junior Samaritan Club was formed. The senior club disbanded in 1942, but was reorganized in 1947 with Mrs. H.H. Clark as president.

The club raised funds for charitable causes through such projects as bazaars, jam showers, rummage sales, teas, flower shows, and art sales. In addition to aiding individuals in need, the club has aided many social service organizations, including Wood's Christian Homes, Victorian Order of Nurses, Big Sisters, day care centres, Calgary Humane Society, Calgary Indian Friendship Centre, Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB), Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA), Meals on Wheels, hospitals, and nursing homes. It also sponsored the construction of Samaritan Sun Tree Park on the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede grounds. In 2014 the group began to record the memories of its long-time members.
