Douglas Arnold Sallis was born January 4, 1923 in Summerland, British Columbia, Canada. At the age of 19, Sallis enlisted in the Canadian Merchant Navy, where he served overseas during World War II in both the Pacific and the Atlantic arenas. Sallis served on the following ships: S.S. Mt. Robson Park, S.S. Victoria Park, S.S. Mont. Morency Park, and the S.S. Dalwarnic. In March of 1946, he was discharged with the final rank of Marine Engineer, 4th Class, at Halifax, N.S..
After his military service, Sallis studied pre-medicine at the University of British Columbia from 1946-1950. In 1950, he married Margaret Willms and they had two children together. The couple and their children moved to Kingston, Ontario, where Sallis studied medicine at Queen's University (1950-1955). Sallis later moved to Wisconsin, USA to practice family medicine in 1958, and he co-established the La Salle family practice. Margaret passed away in 1966 and Sallis later remarried in 1967 to Carol Anderson and they had two children together. Prompted by his experiences in the Merchant Navy, from 1976-78 Sallis served in Papua New Guinea as a medical officer for the Canadian University Service Overseas (CUSO) at Kundiawa General Hospital. After returning from Papua New Guinea, Sallis continued to work at his family practice until his retirement in 1999. Sallis passed away on July 25, 2009.
