Biographical history

Ronald Reed Lilley, was born in Edmonton on Feb. 5, 1925. During World War II he volunteered for military service when he was 18, on Feb. 6, 1943. Overseas, he served with the Regina Rifles and was wounded on October 31, 1944 in the fighting near Antwerp. He continued to serve in the armed forces after the war. In 1954 he was posted to the Queens Own Rifles in Currie Barracks, Calgary. In September 1955, he was posted to Vietnam as part of the Joint peacekeeping force and served there for one year returning to his unit in September 1956. In 1958-9, he attended an officer’s training course In Camberley, Sussex. In 1959 he was Foreign Liaison Officer in the Directorate of Military Intelligence at Army Headquarters in Ottawa. In 1962, he was posted to the 2nd Battalion unit recently returned from Germany and in the Fall of 1962, he took over command of B Company. In 1964, he was posted to the Royal Canadian School of Infantry to become Director of the Tactics Division. In January, 1973 he was diagnosed with terminal cancer and died later that same year.

Archival history

After Lilley's death material was kept by his wife, Doris M. Lilley who donated it in 2008 to the Military Museums Library and Archives.

Scope and content

Consists predominantly of records pertaining to the military career of Ronald Reed Lilley. There is also scant records pertaining to Lilley's father, Charles W. Lilley, and his brother, C. J. Lilley. Both brother and father were also involved with the Canadian military.
