Canadian educator, composer, editor and critic Richard Johnston was born in Chicago, Illinois, on May 9, 1917. Began teaching in Canada in 1947. Died in Calgary, Alberta, on August 16, 1997. Biographical information available in Encyclopedia of music in Canada. 2nd ed., p. 663.

Fonds consists of correspondence; research material; manuscripts of books on North American folk music and radio scripts for CBC Wednesday Night for which R. Johnston selected, arranged and conducted the music; manuscript scores of orchestral, instrumental, choral, operatic and chamber works, as well as incidental music for the theatre and folk music arranged by R. Johnston; material relating to R. Johnston's research and collection of folklore and folk songs, including reports of his folk song collection in Saskatchewan and Mennonite Ontario, transcripts of oral history tapes and sound cassettes describing the folklore collection; biographical and other information on various musicians; photographs; and material relating to musical organizations, such as the Alberta Composers' Association and the International Society for Music Education, with which R. Johnston was affiliated. Accession 881/11.3 consists of material relating to the publications of R. Johnston's book Folk songs North America sings: a source book for all teachers (Toronto: E.C. Kerby, 1984).
