Biographical history

The Revelstoke Lumber Company was started in 1901 by Dan Robinson and Robert Howson. It built a sawmill on the Columbia River near Revelstoke, British Columbia. In 1905 the company was purchased by Samuel H. Bowman, who also owned the Bowman Sine Lumber Company. He formed a new company called the Revelstoke Sawmill Company Ltd. In 1906 Revelstoke and Bowman Sine started opening lumber yards in towns along the rail lines in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

The head office of Revelstoke was moved to Calgary in 1910, and the following year management of Bowman Sine was taken over by the Calgary office as well. In 1911 Revelstoke and Bowman Sine jointly purchased Globe Lumber Company and Alberta Lumber Company. In 1912 Bowman Sine was renamed Atlas Lumber Company. Other companies bought out by Revelstoke and Atlas at various times include Century Investment Company, H.W. Wilson Lumber Company, Seymour River Lumber Company, Yale-Columbia Lumber Company, Summit Lumber Company and Empire Lumber Company. In 1961 Revelstoke and Atlas Consolidated under the name Revelstoke Building Materials Ltd. The company purchased Monarch Lumber Company in 1963, at which time Revelstoke owned 149 lumberyards and six lumber mills. Venture Funding Corporation purchased control of the company in 1971 and renamed it Revelstoke Companies Ltd.
