Biographical history

In 1948 a group of about a dozen people in wheelchairs met to form a club for the purposes of social contact and recreation. In 1950 it was incorporated under the name The Alberta Association for the Handicapped, Calgary Branch. Ruth Gorman, 1914-2002, was the first president. In 1955 the society adopted the name Rehabilitation Sociey of Calgary for the Handicapped. Now more than a social club, the society offers physical, social, mental, economic and vocational aid to people with a wide variety of mental, physical, social and emotional disabilities. It has operated a sheltered workshop, vocational and job placement programs, a homebound industry program, and a very active social club. The name was changed to the Rehabilitation Society of Calgary in the 1990s.
