Biographical history
Mrs. Peterson's Knitting Group was set up in Calgary, Alberta in October 1939 by Mrs. C.W. Peterson, Mrs. E.L. (Dorothie) Harvie and others. The group consisted of twelve women who knit and raised money for the benefit of soldiers during the Second World War. Their rules stated that each member was expected to turn in two pairs of hand-knitted socks or one sweater per month, or in lieu contribute $1. The money collected was donated to other groups such as the Red Cross and The Over-Seas League (Canada) Tobacco and Hamper Fund, which distributed cigarettes, ditty bags and hampers to soldiers and prisoners-of-war overseas. The group also adopted two members of the Calgary Highlanders, J.W.N. "Bill" Young and M.D. Eves, to whom they sent letters and parcels.
