During the years of WWI, Mary Gray live in the Calgary area with her parents. Gray corresponded with a number of different soldiers active in the Canadian Expeditionary Force while they were overseas.

William Proven was born in Galashiels, Scotland the son of William and Annabella K. S. Proven. After immigrating to Canada he worked as a carpenter in the Calgary, Alberta region before enlisting with the Canadian Expeditionary Force on November 16th, 1914. He served overseas as a member of the 31st Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Alberta Regiment). He died of his wounds received in battle on March 7, 1917.

In his memoir, Medicine and Duty (University of Calgary Press, 2007) Harold McGill, medical officer for the 31st Battalion, remembers James and William Prove: "There were two Provens in the battalion, brothers, one in C Company and one in A. Both were sergeants. I remember them distinctly as both were exceptionally fine soldiers. Later on in the war, the other brother [William] was also killed in action. Whenever I think of them after so many years I am filled with pity for the mother in her grief at the loss of two such sons."
