Biographical history

Manchester Grocery was established in Calgary, Alberta about 1923 by Mervyn Humfrey, 1892-1948. Humfrey was born in Oxfordshire, England and came to Calgary in 1912. He was employed by John Irwin Ltd. and Pryce-Jones before opening the grocery at 6609 Macleod Trail South in the Kingsland subdivision. The firm was an affiliate of Associated Grocers Ltd. He and his wife Rose Edith, 1887-1973, had two daughters Muriel and Dorothy. The firm continued in operation until 1958.
