Notice biographique
A proposal for an international centre on The University of Calgary campus was drafted by the Associate Vice-President (Academic) in 1985 and approved by the General Faculties Council in December 1985 and by the Board of Governors in January 1986. An Executive Director, The International Centre was appointed in 1987, reported to the President, and was responsible for advising the University on international development, international business and international relations. Previously, this responsibility had belonged to the Associate VP (Academic).
Beginning in 1991, the Director reported to the Vice-President (Academic) and Provost; chaired The International Centre Council, supervised the Division of International Development and the Division of International Relations, and acted as liaison with the Division of International Business which reported to the Dean of Management.
In 1999, the International Centre was reorganized. Dr. Duffie VanBalkom was appointed as the Associate Vice-President (International) reporting to the Vice-President (Academic). The former divisions of International Relations and International Development were integrated with the International Office of Recruitment and Marketing to provide an academic support unit for internationalization. The former divisions were replaced by International Development and Research, and by International Programs and Partnerships. International Marketing and Recruitment was removed from Student Academic Services and integrated as part of the International Centre team.
When Dr. VanBalkom left the position of Associate Vice-President (International) in 2003, the International Centre came under the purview of the Vice-President (Research), whose title was changed to Vice-President (Research and International) as a result of this restructuring.
In 2004, Dr. Dennis Salahub was appointed Vice-President (Research and International); Dr Rose Goldstein held the position 2007-2011. In 2011 the roles were separated again into Vice-President (Research) and Vice-Provost International), with the International Team under the direction of the Vice-Provost (International) fulfilling most of the functions of the former International Centre.
The International Education Council (IEC) was created to oversee policy development and to assist faculties with their internationalization initiatives. The IEC is composed of the chairpersons of each faculty standing committee on internationalization, the directors of the International Centre and other other resource persons.
The 15th anniversary of the International Centre was celebrated in 2001. The commemorative publication "Internationalization at the University of Calgary" was produced in October of that year.
