Biographical history

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers was established in 1889 and adopted its current name in 1965. Local 357 was chartered by the IAMA in Calgary, Alberta in 1900. The main objectives of the IAMA are to increase membership within its trade jurisdiction, maintain job security, increase wages, and improve work hours as well as conditions. In its early years the IAMA primarily consisted of machinists in the railway industry. Auto mechanics were admitted to membership in 1912 and the union began to incorporate aircraft machinists in the mid-1930s. Membership increased dramatically in 1943 with members building aircraft, guns and ships. The postwar period brought a radical change in the IAMA's composition with a decline in railway membership and an increase in membership from other industries, particularly air transportation. By 1994 this union no longer existed.
