Use these options to specify how the date range returns results. "Exact" means that the start and end dates of descriptions returned must fall entirely within the date range entered. "Overlapping" means that any description whose start or end dates touch or overlap the target date range will be returned.

Notebook

The majority of the handwritten notebook contains an "Address de la Defense au Jury, M. Fitzpatrick." At the back of the notebook are several stanzas of a poem.

Diary

  • Pages 1-32 are mostly composed of many stanzas that create a continuous prose; the writing often has a poetic air.
  • Pages 32-57 are a draft letter addressed to “Mr. President” where Riel reveals his plans to the U.S. government to set up a second provisional government and take control of Western Canada (written in English).
  • Pages 58-60 are few entries relating to Riel's faith.
  • Pages 61-76 are poetic prose about Minnesota and Manitoba.

File consists of a reprint of a report upon the case of Louis Riel with correspondence and petitions concerning Riel's trial, his status as an American citizen, and Riel's request for diplomatic intervention by the American government to prevent the execution of the sentence pronounced upon him by the Canadian courts.
