The collection reflects not only Dr. Johnston's collecting passion but also his desire that the collection provide research material complementing resources in the Eugene Strens Recreational Mathematics Collection. During his lifetime, Dr. Johnston had also speculated on the possibility of inviting designs for University of Calgary playing cards which could be used for fund raising purposes to support the music archives collection.
