  • File consists of letters relating to J. Metcalf's activities on the membership committee involved in establishing the Writers' Union of Canada and as Quebec representative of the Union. Membership committee correspondence includes letters relating to invitations to authors to join the Union and discussing criteria for membership in the Union; list of members originally contacted as potential members; and report of membership committee. Correspondence relating to J. Metcalf's acting as Quebec representative includes letters dealing with publishing problems encountered by members. Also includes letters relating to J. Metcalf's resignation from the Union. Includes duplicates of some outgoing letters.

Metcalf's holograph annotation "MS of 16 X 12 returned by McGraw-Hill - original typescripts with alterations etc. in author's hand.". Includes J. Metcalf's Introduction; Author's commentaries by Morley Callaghan, Hugh Garner, Mordecai Richler, Alice Munro, Shirley Faessler, Alden Nowlan, George Bowering, David Helwig, John Metcalf and Ray Smith; Hugh Garner's Biography; and short stories A basket of apples by Shirley Faessler and A bag of cherries by J. Metcalf. M. Richler's Author's commentary was written to accompany story The summer my grandmother was supposed to die. This story was later withdrawn and replaced with story Bambinger. Also includes J. Metcalf's short promotional blurb published on half-title page and note of enclosure to David _____.
