William Grierson fonds
CA ACU CAA F0062 · Fonds · 1961-2015, predominately 1961-1999

The fonds consists of 1852 architectural drawings, 25 digital photographs, 1 textual record, 2 graphic materials, and 288 digital copies of architectural drawings documenting the architectural career of William Grierson. The 1852 architectural drawings comprise the majority of the records in the fonds. Most of the drawings are originals though there are a smaller number of reprographic copies. They span the years when Grierson was practicing from 1961 to 1999. The drawings include preliminary drawings, design development drawings, and working drawings for proposed and built projects, largely in the Toronto area, but also in the cottage country of Georgian Bay, Lake Simcoe, and Haliburton, various parts of rural Central Ontario, as well as Prince George, B.C. Among the 138 projects documented in the fonds are Firstbrook cottage (1962), Firstbrook residence Old George Place (1964), Ferguson cottage Little Bear Lake (1965), Table Rock (1967), Northwood Pulp and Timber Office (1977, 1981), 33 Astley Avenue (1979-1984), Alterations to Matthews country house (1981), Lowther Avenue coach house (1983), Noranda Hemlo Mine Office (1983), Additions and alterations for Mr. and Mrs. William Jackson (1984), Rankin country house (1989), Northwest Pine Island (1991), Jacklin Island (1995), Poplar Hill (1996), Alterations to 23 Rosedale Road (1996), and Spears cottage (1997). The sole photographs in the fonds are 25 digital images of the Kneisel House in Belleville likely taken in 2006. The digital copies of Grierson’s drawings on 4 CD-Rs are almost entirely scans of originals held in the fonds. These digital copies were created after Grierson’s death likely by his colleague Anthony Belcher. On CD 1, however, there are digital copies of drawings of the Table Rock boat house and Table Rock hoist, of which there are not originals or prints in the fonds. The fonds has been arranged into two series: 1. Project Records - Drawings; and 2. Digital Files.

CA ACU CAA F0049 · Collection · 1922

Two maquettes of gargoyles carved as models for the grotesques that would subsequently be carved in the upper corners of the entrance to the Senate Chamber of Canadian Parliament. The maquettes were donated by the family of Thomas Dunlop Rankin (1886-1965) who supervised the reconstruction of Parliament Centre Block (1916-1927). Initials carved into the grotesques "W.J.A." are those of Walter Joseph Allen who was an English sculptor employed on the construction of the Centre Block. Allen worked as the superintendent of the modeling and carving shop and was responsible for the team of carvers from April 1917 to June 1924.
