James A. N. Mackie Lancaster Building collection

Collection consists of architectural drawings and specifications for the Lancaster Building in Calgary. The Lancaster Building is a notable example of Calgary’s early commercial architecture and one of the city’s first high-rise buildings. It is located at the corner of 2 Street and Stephen Avenue SW. The collection consists of sixteen drawings by James C. Teague (1863-1947) from 1912, ten drawings by William Stanley Bates (1872-1949) from 1919, and an additional six drawings by an unidentified architect likely created in the 1910s. The collection also includes specifications and several brochures and pamphlets related to the construction of the building. The Lancaster Building was built for James Stuart Mackie from 1912 to 1913 under architect James C. Teague, and following WWI, from 1916 to 1919 under architect William S. Bates. The materials in the collection were maintained by James A. N. Mackie, descendant of James Stuart Mackie.

Fonds consists of architectural drawings, correspondence, reports, photographs, panels, one model, and other records documenting the work of Patkau Architects from 1978 to 1983. The fonds solely consists of project records, including drawings, textual files, photographs, panels, and models. The fonds documents over 15 projects, largely in Edmonton where the Patkau office was located from 1978 to 1983. Projects documented in the fonds include Galleria Condominiums, Pyrch Residence, Blue Quill Elementary School, and McGregor Residence. There is one series in the fonds: 1. Project records.

Collection consists of scene and costume design for operas, operettas, stage plays, films, revues and ballets, as well as for many unidentified productions. Many designs are undated. Design media include watercolour, gouache, pencil, charcoal and tempera. Designers represented include Percy Anderson (1851-1928), Georges Barbier (1882-1932), Alexandre Benois (1870-1960), Charles Betout (active ca. 1900-1939), Umberto Brunelleschi (1879-1949), Boris Bilinsky (1900-1948), Serge Soudeikine (1882-1946) and C. Wilhelm (1856-1925). Collection also includes Vanity Fair lithographs of actors and managers (ca. 1874-1912) and a series of engraved dramatic portraits.

Fonds consists of architectural drawings, correspondence, minutes, reports, specifications, models, and other records documenting the architectural career of Douglas Cardinal from 1963 to 1984. The majority of the fonds consists of project records, including drawings, textual files, and models, though there is also a small volume of office files (community development process diagrams and organizational structure diagrams), as well as one file of Cardinal’s student thesis drawings. The fonds documents over 100 projects, largely in the prairies, including St. Mary’s Church, Grande Prairie Regional College, Alberta Government Service Centre Ponoka, Arctic Gardens, Grotski Residence, Cardinal Design Studio, Parada Building, Spruce Grove Composite High School, St. Albert Civic and Cultural Centre, Leighton Artist Colony, as well as notable projects in the Northwest Territories, including Bailey Residence, Hay River High School, and Cambridge Bay Centre. There are three series in the fonds: 1. Student records; 2. Office records; and 3. Project records.
