The fonds consists of Nelson Miles's own retained copy of his report to the Assistant Adjutant General, Department of Dakota, U.S. Army, St. Paul, Minnesota. Miles reports on his military operations (1876-1877) against Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, Lame Deer, Chief Joseph, and other chieftains. The report includes recommendations to the United States government on Indian policy and strategy.

The fonds consists of twelve letters written to his father, William Young, and brother, George Young, in Hamilton, Ontario, about his homesteading experiences (1884-1897). In many of the letters he asks for money, and gives details of the costs of establishing a ranch, including the prices of farm equipment, livestock, and household furnishings. Also includes a letter from his mother to his father, William Young (1864).
