John Flanders Photography collection

The John Flanders Photography collection contains approximately 2,000 slides and 2,700 negatives from the 1990s to the early 2000s in the Toronto, Ontario area. Photographed buildings include residences, office buildings, Confederation Square (Toronto), hotels, Massey College, Scarborough Metro Zoo, Pearson College of the Pacific, Plywood Research Building, Queen's University, Shaw Festival Theatre, and Trent University.

Henry Yorke Mann fonds

The fonds consists of records documenting the architectural career of Henry Yorke Mann primarily from 1953 to 1970 and 1997 to 2015. There are also records relating to his training as an architect at Washington State College and the University of Oregon from 1949 to 1954. Records include architectural drawings, photographs, notes, correspondence, sketches, journals, reports, contracts, teaching materials, articles, and grant and award submissions. There are over 100 of Mann’s projects documented in the fonds, including 1960s projects Eijgel Residence, Clark Residence, Engineers’ Club, Killarney Community Centre, Mann Residence, and the Laura Lynn Riding and Country Club, as well as projects from the 1990s to 2015 including the Allard Residences at Salt Spring and Chestermere, Posts Standing (Ramus Residence), the Totems, Quietude Residence, and Manndala (Architect’s Residence). The fonds has been arranged into four series: 1. Personal records; 2. Professional records; 3. Office records; and 4. Project records.

Fonds consists of architectural drawings and photographs documenting the architectural works of J. Francis Brown, his son, F. Bruce Brown, and their subsequent firms, Bruce Brown & Brisley, Brown Brisley & Brown, Douglas Bruce Brown, and Brown Beck & Ross. The fonds includes early drawings by J. Francis Brown from 1890 to 1900 for the Monroe County Courthouse, the proposed B.C. Legislative Buildings, and a Triumphal Arch in Toronto. There are twenty-two student drawings by F. Bruce Brown from 1920 to 1922. The fonds includes photographs of architecture in France, Italy, and England taken by F. Bruce Brown while he studied at the Fontainebleau School of Fine Arts (1923-1924). There are copies of 189 colour slides documenting projects designed by the architects from 1886 to 1972. The slides are copies of photographs taken by F. Bruce Brown. The fonds notably also includes 1,765 architectural drawings for over eighty church projects the architects designed in Ontario from 1936 to 2006. The churches are mainly located in Toronto and the surrounding area, and are almost entirely Protestant churches. The drawings include preliminary proposal drawings, architectural working drawings, and perspective drawings. Among the notable projects documented in the fonds are McMaster Divinity College, All Saints Church Kingsway, Islington United Church, Bloor Street United Church, Leaside United Church, Kingsway-Lambton United Church, Parkdale United Church & Residence, St. Matthew's Anglican Church, St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church (Cobourg), and St. Giles Presbyterian Church. The architectural drawings include several perspective drawings created by the renowned Canadian sculptor William McElcheran, who was employed by Bruce Brown & Brisley as liturgical designer in the 1950s. The fonds contains five series: Series 1: J. Francis Brown drawings 1890-1900; Series 2: F. Bruce Brown student drawings 1920-1922; Series 3: F. Bruce Brown photographs 1923-1924; Series 4: F. The records document his activities as a renowned Canadian architectural studies teacher, critic, and writer. The files consist of correspondence, writings, photographs, presentations, awards, posters, research, and teaching files. The majority of the records are from 1950 to 2018, spanning his activities as a professor and dean at the University of Toronto (1967-1993, 2004-2009), professor at Harvard University (1993-2004), a visiting lecturer at schools and events around the world, and as an influential critic and writer on architectural theory. The fonds includes records relating to Baird’s many writings on architecture, his education at the University of Toronto (1957-1962), his service on associations, and his travels both personal and professional over the years. The records document several significant engineering projects across Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia, including the Brooks Aqueduct (1912), early prairie water works and electrical systems in Fort Saskatchewan, Kindersley, Bassano, Empress, and Regina between 1903 and 1915, and the Calgary Water Power Company hydro project from 1923 to 1927. The fonds has been divided into two series: 1. John Galt Engineering Co. and 2. Haddin & Miles.

Fonds consists of 149 architectural drawings from the architectural practice of H.M. & W.A. Whiddington, Whiddington & Fry, and H.M. Whiddington. H.M. Whiddington was one of the main architects in Lethbridge in the period from 1910 to 1930. The fonds documents several projects, largely in Lethbridge, but also in Edmonton, Coaldale, and Baron, Alberta, and Cranbrook and Princeton, British Columbia. The drawings include architectural plans for several important early buildings in Lethbridge, such as the Wesley Church, the Manual Training School, the Exhibition Building, Galbraith Street School, Bank of Montreal, and St. Patrick’s Catholic School. The fonds has been divided into three series: 1. H.M. & W.A. Whiddington, 2. Whiddington & Fry, and 3. H.M. Whiddington.

Collection consists of architectural drawings and specifications for the Lancaster Building in Calgary. The Lancaster Building is a notable example of Calgary’s early commercial architecture and one of the city’s first high-rise buildings. It is located at the corner of 2 Street and Stephen Avenue SW. The collection consists of sixteen drawings by James C. Teague (1863-1947) from 1912, ten drawings by William Stanley Bates (1872-1949) from 1919, and an additional six drawings by an unidentified architect likely created in the 1910s. The collection also includes specifications and several brochures and pamphlets related to the construction of the building. The Lancaster Building was built for James Stuart Mackie from 1912 to 1913 under architect James C. Teague, and following WWI, from 1916 to 1919 under architect William S. Bates. The materials in the collection were maintained by James A. N. Mackie, descendant of James Stuart Mackie.
