John Flanders Photography collection

The John Flanders Photography collection contains approximately 2,000 slides and 2,700 negatives from the 1990s to the early 2000s in the Toronto, Ontario area. Photographed buildings include residences, office buildings, Confederation Square (Toronto), hotels, Massey College, Scarborough Metro Zoo, Pearson College of the Pacific, Plywood Research Building, Queen's University, Shaw Festival Theatre, and Trent University.

The collection reflects the diverse collecting interests of Eric Harvie and consists of materials from many different sources. Much of the material reflects western Canadian history and military history. It includes many isolated items bearing autographs of statesmen, military leaders, and other famous people.

The collection consists of Stand Off colony records: recording of church service (1963) and singing (1971); photographs (1940s-1964); recorded interview with Jacob Walter on early history of colony (1971); sketches of early buildings; ethnological study, recorded observations and films by Dr. Karl Peter on colony life; microfilm of early religious writings (ca. 1550s-1560s), chronicle of Hutterian history (1527-1665, 1947- 1960), and legal agreements with government authorities (1782-ca. 1960) (predominantly in German); articles of association for Stand Off colony (1924-1956); and genealogy of Jacob Walter family (in German). Also consists of records from a number of southern Alberta colonies, especially Red Willow: German songbooks (1800s-1955, and some microfilmed from 1696-1825); medical book (1612, in German); microfilm of religious writings (1696-1875); recorded songs and interviews; and photographs (1961-1964). Includes microfilm of correspondence between Russian Hutterite colonies (1800s).

B. Rowell's Military collection

The collection consists predominantly of autographs of British military and naval leaders, statesmen, nobility, and other famous people. Many of the autographs are accompanied by portraits. It also includes a collection of British military documents from the Napoleonic Wars: recruiting instructions issued by the commanders of two regiments; an oath of allegiance; a notice of reward for apprehension of a deserter; proceedings of a court-martial; a circular letter from the War Office regarding payment of men; and a pay sheet for officers. Includes photographs of the South African War and the First World War, including some depicting Winston Churchill as a young officer. Includes British First World War propaganda posters, and a poster issued by the Allied occupation forces in Jerusalem.

The collection consists of ships' logs, a shipboard newspaper, and a seaman's diary from merchant and naval sailing vessels. Includes the diary of John Bartlett (1790-1795), a member of the crew of the Massachusetts, an American merchant ship sailing from Boston to Vancouver Island and the Queen Charlotte Islands and back to Canton via the Sandwich Islands. Bartlett then joined the American whaling ship Elenoro, bound back to the USA via Madagascar. Includes the log (1805-1806) of the Royal George, a British merchant ship sailing from England via India to China and back. Includes a manuscript newspaper published aboard the British naval vessel Alceste in 1816. Also includes logs kept aboard British naval vessels as training exercises by junior officers George Buck Keene (1844-1848), G. T. L. Bolton (1860-1865), and Collingwood Fenwick (1870-1872). These logs feature watercolour views of ports visited, profiles of coastlines, and manuscript maps.

The collection consists of photocopies of Metis genealogical research material collected by Burtonshaw from such sources as Library and Archives Canada, various libraries and churches, and personal contacts. Includes a complete run of "The Metis Newsletter" as well as Metis Researcher lists compiled by Burtonshaw. Burtonshaw's personal memoirs "I Remember" are included. Also includes photographs of Manitoba and Geoff's hometown of Valpoy, Barkerville and the Cariboo country of British Columbia, Fort Simpson, Hay River, Nahanni, Batoche, the Fidler family reunion, etc.
