Alexander Pirie drawings for the Prophetic Bible Institute

Consists of six architectural drawings created by Alexander Pirie for the proposed Prophetic Bible Institute building on 8th Avenue, Calgary, Alberta. The drawings include floor plans, elevations, sections, and details. The specifications for the building project are also included in the file. Sheet No. 1 has a note that white pencil measurements taken March 6, 1952, Rule Wynn & Rule, perhaps indicating that the drawings were maintained by Rule Wynn & Rule for a restoration project in the early 1950s.

Weintraub residence (1961) and an Apartment Building for Balbi Construction (1961-1962). The drawings are construction sets that include floor plans, elevations, sections, and details. There is also a set of specifications for the Weintraub family residence.

Fonds consists of 149 architectural drawings from the architectural practice of H.M. & W.A. Whiddington, Whiddington & Fry, and H.M. Whiddington. H.M. Whiddington was one of the main architects in Lethbridge in the period from 1910 to 1930. The fonds documents several projects, largely in Lethbridge, but also in Edmonton, Coaldale, and Baron, Alberta, and Cranbrook and Princeton, British Columbia. The drawings include architectural plans for several important early buildings in Lethbridge, such as the Wesley Church, the Manual Training School, the Exhibition Building, Galbraith Street School, Bank of Montreal, and St. Patrick’s Catholic School. The fonds has been divided into three series: 1. H.M. & W.A. Whiddington, 2. Whiddington & Fry, and 3. H.M. Whiddington.

The records document several significant engineering projects across Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia, including the Brooks Aqueduct (1912), early prairie water works and electrical systems in Fort Saskatchewan, Kindersley, Bassano, Empress, and Regina between 1903 and 1915, and the Calgary Water Power Company hydro project from 1923 to 1927. The fonds has been divided into two series: 1. John Galt Engineering Co. and 2. Haddin & Miles.

Fonds documents Jeremy Sturgess’s architectural practice from 1975 and 2018. Records include architectural drawings, office files, photographs, diaries, sketchbooks, presentation panels, models, and audiovisual materials. There are over 500 projects documented in the fonds. The architectural projects span his work at the Sturgess Partnership (1978-1987), Sturgess Architects, Ltd. (1987-1993), and Sturgess Architecture (1993-present). Among the notable projects represented are Banff Town Hall, Chuzenji Kanaya Hotel, Yukon Visitor Reception Centre, Calgary Water Centre, 7th Avenue LRT Masterplan & Station Refurbishment, The Bridges Masterplan/Bridgeland Community Centre/Olive, Connaught Gardens, Alberta Pavilion Expo 86, House on Bowen Island, Naidoo/McLaughlan Residence, Assured Beltline, Spiral House, the Block, Borden Residence, and many others. The fonds also includes public relations and marketing records, as well as personal records related to Sturgess’s education and to his affiliation with CAUSA (Calgary Architecture + Urban Studies Alliance).

The records document his activities in the establishment of a School of Architecture in the province of Alberta, the appointment of a City Architect at the City of Calgary, federal tax reform in 1969, and the Prairie Rural Housing Committee at the University of Manitoba. The fonds has been divided into three series: 1. School of Architecture Committee; 2. White Paper on Tax Reform and Proposed Architectural Department City of Calgary; and 3. Prairie Rural Housing Committee.
