Based in the SU Wellness Centre, the Counselling and Student Development Centre (also known as University Counselling Services) offers confidential counselling services for University of Calgary student, faculty and staff. Individual counselling, groups, and educational workshops are available to students and fee-for-service career counselling is offered to prospective students and alumni. UCS is accredited by the International Association of Counselling Services. Services are provided by psychologists and a wide variety of trainees under the supervision of qualified staff members.
Student Counselling Services seems to have existed at the University as early as 1961. In 1969, President Carrothers approved the establishment of the Student Counselling Services Advisory Committee to advise the Chief Academic Officer for Student Affairs and the Director of Student Counselling Services. The Advisory Committee determined that Student Counselling Services was an administrative rather than an academic unit.
In 1977, Student Counselling Services received accreditation from the International Association of Counselling Services. In August 1982, the name was officially changed to University Counselling Services.
In 1999, the name changed again to the Counselling and Student Development Centre, but even fifteen years later, in 2015, the unit was still popularly known by its former name, University Counselling Services, or simply referred to as Counselling.
