Fonds consists of correspondence; scrapbook, notebooks, journals, sketchbooks and travel diary; manuscripts of poetry, short stories, articles and a play; photographs, including many of M. Bates's paintings; exhibition catalogues; architectural drawings; watercolours of St. Mary's Cathedral (Calgary); newsclippings of articles about M. Bates; and miscellaneous material. MsC 299 consists of a bronze wall plaque from M. Bates' architectural office in Calgary. Accession 786/05.7 consists of over 200 letters and postcards written by M. Bates, primarily to his parents, while he was a prisoner of war in Germany (May 1940-May 1945).
