The Learned Societies Conference is Canada's largest annual gathering of academics and professionals working in the social sciences and humanities. The conferences have been held annually since 1948, with meetings usually held at a Canadian university in spring or early summer. The conferences are organized locally but are operated on behalf of the Royal Society of Canada, the Social Sciences Federation of Canada and the Canadian Federation of the Humanities. The University of Calgary first hosted the Learneds in 1968.
The University of Calgary Learneds Conference Secretariat was headed by Harry Hiller and Ted Sullivan. The Secretariat was the planning and coordinating office for the conference events, which included a city-wide Celebration of Learning involving schools and the general public. The Conference was held from June 3-18, 1994 with the Gala Opening at the Jack Singer Concert Hall. Events included a book publishers fair, musical performances and book readings, panel discussions, lectures, drama presentations and film screenings.
