Biographical history
The Effective Writing Program Office was established in 1976 and reported to the Faculty of General Studies (after 2000, the Faculty of Communication and Culture). The Office administered the Effective Writing Requirement which all students at the University of Calgary at the time were required to meet within twelve months from the beginning of the session of their initial registration. The requirement, otherwise known as the Alberta Universities' Writing Competence Test, required students to write an essay on a general topic to demonstrate a university entrance level competence in writing. The Office also arranged for individual tutoring for students experiencing difficulties in their writing through its Writing Centre.
On December 17, 2009, the University of Calgary eliminated the Effective Writing Requirement for undergraduate students and the Office closed.
