Biographical history

The Division of Information Services was formed in 1971 in response to the 1969 Review of Administrative Structures and Functions. Headed by a Director who reported to the VP(Academic), it included the Library, Department of Computer Services, and Communications Media Services. The Director was a member of Dean's Council and General Faculties Council. The Division was dismantled in October 1974 and it appears that subsequently the Director of the Department of Computer Services then reported to the Associate Vice-President (Academic), the Chief Librarian to the VP(Academic), and the Director of Communications Media to the Associate Vice-President (Academic) and Chief Academic Officer, Student Affairs.

The Division of Information Services was again formed in 1988 or 1989 with a Director who reported to the Vice-President (Academic). It was responsible for the leadership, co-ordination and general administration of those units which provided institutional support in the areas of information services and technologies -- University Computing Services, Communications Media, University Archives, University of Calgary Press, and University Libraries. In 1998 the Division was reorganised into three smaller units: Information Resources Group and Information Technologies Group each with Directors who report to the Vice-President (Academic), and the Learning Commons with a Director who reports to the Vice-President (Research). The Information Resources (IR) Group initally consisted of the University Archives, the University Library, the University Press and the Image Centre. The Nickle Arts Museum was added to IR in 2000. The Information Technologies (IT) Group includes the university's academic and administrative computing services and network support (Information Technologies) and Communications Media. The Learning Commons is responsible for curriculum planning and design, teaching development and distributed and distance learning. Since Information Resources and Information Technologies each have fonds level descriptions (as do their constituent units) no records for those units form part of this fonds.
