Prior to 1970, courses in computing sciences, mathematics and statistics were offered by the Department of Mathematics. The Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computing Sciences was established in 1970 and formed part of the Faculty of Arts and Science. A Departmental Executive in 1970 comprised the chairs of the four Departmental divisions: Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics and Computing Sciences. The Executive's responsibilities were to make recommendations on budgets, curriculum and the overall coordination of the Department. Separate Departments (Mathematics and Statistics, Computer Sciences) were created in 1976 when the Faculty of Arts and Sciences divided.
The Computing Committee was an advisory committee to aid the Computer Manager and other academic departments in their planning of computer use. The Committee made recommendations to the GFC through its chair regarding academic aspects of the computing facility and to the President through the Director of the Computing Centre regarding budget and administrative needs.
