Administrative history

The Department of Drama has been a part of the Faculty of Fine Arts since the Faculty's inception in
1967. In 1966, it was recommended by an ad hoc committee that a Faculty of Fine Arts be established to
indicate the aspirations of the University for a fine arts programme. Before this, a joint Department of Fine
Arts and Fine Arts Education was administered by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the Faculty of
Education, and courses in drama were offered by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

The Faculty of Fine Arts opened in July 1967, and was comprised of the Departments of Drama, Art and
Music which each offered four-year programs. The major specializations for the Department of Drama
were: Dramatic Criticism and Theatre History, Technical Productions, including stage lighting, stagecraft,
stage and costume design, Directing, Acting & Speech, and Media Studies. In 1978, Master's programs
were also offered in these areas. The Department staged yearly productions to showcase the acting,
technical expertise, stage and costume design talents of the students. Productions ranged from
contemporary play-wrights to Shakespeare, Ibsen, Chekov, Shaw and Moliere. The Department offers a
BFA and a MFA

In April 2010, all departments from the Faculty of Fine Arts were combined with those of the Faculties of
Social Sciences, Communication and Culture and Humanities into the Faculty of Art. In 2014, the School of Creative and Performing Arts was formed.

Heads of the Department of Drama: V.E. Mitchell, 1967-1974; J.A. Euringer, 1974-1976; R.B. Moore,
