Biographical history

The University of Alberta Alumni Association, Calgary branch endorsed and proposed the formation of the University of Alberta, Calgary Alumni Association in 1965. After autonomy was granted to the University of Calgary the following year, the membership of the Alumni Association, The University of Calgary was formalized. The first president was D. Hugh Bessell. The Association was incorporated under the Societies Act in March 1976.

The University of Calgary Alumni Association is committed to assisting the University in fund-raising and policy-making, and in developing and encouraging on-going relationships between graduates and the University, and between the campus and the community. To communicate regularly with the alumni, the Association published a newsletter, CALUM, begun at least by June 1970, which was renamed Calgary Alumni Magazine in 1983 and ARCH in 1999. The Association has representation on the University's Board of Governors, Senate, General Faculties Council, and various councils and committees. It has been a major financial contributor the University Library, and provides funds for scholarships and research efforts on campus.

In addition to records relating to the University of Calgary Alumni Association (also known as UCalgary Alumni Association), the Alumni fonds includes records relating to the office within the University responsible for alumni relations, giving, etc. Known as Alumni Affairs until the early 2000s, by 2002 the office had been renamed Alumni Relations. It is led by the Associate Vice-President, Alumni who reports to the Vice-President, University Relations.

Fonds consists of minutes of board of directors, executive meetings, and annual general meetings (1965-1993); annual reports (1976-2008); directors' manual (n.d., 1982); constitution and by-laws (1968-1970); administrative records of the Alumni Association including files on the mentor program, campus card, and general correspondence; fundraising records; volunteer recruitment files; 25th anniversary planning and celebration files; distinguished alumni awards annual files (1986-1998); minutes and agenda packages of Alumni Relations Coalition meetings; Alumni Affairs photographs and videotapes relating to the Distinguished Alumni Award; Alumni Association magazines CALUM (1969-2011), Alumni (1983-1999), and ARCH (1999-2003); pamphlets and programmes; and newsclippings. Fonds includes series for Annual Reports, University of Calgary Alumni Association; and Pamphlets, Alumni Association - Distinguished Alumni.
