Scope and content

Typescript (carbon copy) with A. Nowlan's holograph annotations of periodicals in which poems were published, page and line counts, and position of poems within the collection manuscript. Arrangement of poems within manuscript as received. Manuscript appears to be the printer's copy sent to publisher Clarke, Irwin & Company Limited; however, arrangement and content vary from poems listed by Clarke, Irwin and enclosed in their letter, November 18, 1981. (See repository photocopy of "Order of contents at submission" included in file.) Several poems on the list are missing from the manuscript; as well, four poems, To a certain gentleman, Of bears and giants, The lay of the living dead and He remembers that Irish bards had the power to curse, are included in the manuscript but missing from the Clarke, Irwin list. Manuscript includes "Notes to the editor", in which A. Nowlan discusses print format preferences for the collection. Includes references to the following: The secretive fishermen; I might not tell everybody this; The gospel according to St. Thomas; "Why so sad, my dear?" said Queen Anne; The inflatable woman; I'm simply walking; Only when my heart freezes; He runs into an old acquaintance; When a man loves his son's bride; A white book lies open; At the head table; Déjà rêvé; A Jansenist with a snow shovel; The seasick sailor, and others; And now the good news; The thief; A necktie and a pair of socks; Sister Williamina in the Valley of the Nashwaak; My beard, once Lionheart red; A momentary glimpse; The cough; To a certain gentleman; Funny face; Of bears and giants; Small craft warnings; The war lost; Hospital parking lot; He reflects upon his own stupidity; A night in 1938, and the night after; Psalm (Running with the wind...); Treasures on earth : poem; The lay of the living dead; His day in court; Just now I heard my father singing; A small prayer; The practice of mercy; We found him kneeling; A poem for Aida Flemming; The weekend god; Star light, star bright; Great things have happened; Until that night; Moonscape; I have a friend; The King of the Wood(s); He; Mother and son : poem; Heard the voices again last night; On the burning of witches; Working late; Chopping onion(s); A pair of pruning shears; The comedians; The best man and the maid of honour; Subway psalm; Friends and lovers; A drive in the country; How beautiful art thy feet with shoes; There is a horrible wing to the hotel; He remembers that Irish bards had the power to curse; Vampires; I'm a stranger here myself; Smoked glass.
