Biographical history

Herbert Sawley, [?- ca. 1949], served as a captain in the 89th Battalion during the First World War. During the Second World War he was a member of the Veterans Guard and was posted to guard prisoner of war camps at Ozada, Kananaskis, Medicine Hat, and Lethbridge, Alberta and Ucluelet and Bamfield, British Columbia. He married Myrle Ennis who trained as a nurse at Calgary's Holy Cross Hospital, graduating in 1929. She worked at a number of institutions including the Radium and X-ray Institute in Calgary. She married Harold T. Mugleston after Herbert's death.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of photographs of officers of the 89th Battalion, POW camps at Ozada and Ucluelet, and nurses training and graduating class. Includes POW sketches from Kananaskis camp and Myrle's nursing certificates.
