Biographical history

Harry William Hays, 1909-1982, was born in Carstairs, Alberta. The family moved to Turner Siding on the south edge of Calgary in 1924. He took over management of the family's Holstein dairy farm, Hays and Company, in 1932 and bought it in 1943. In 1934 he married Muriel Biglund, and they had one son, Daniel. The same year he became the first exporter of purebred dairy cattle from Canada to Britain. In 1946 Harry and his family moved to Oakville, Ontario to establish Hays' Farms (Oakville), which became the largest exporter of purebred livestock in North America, exporting to 23 countries. The family returned to Calgary in 1949, but Harry continued as president of the Ontario operation until 1956, when his brother, Tom, took over. Harry was a well known auctioneer in the 1940s and 1950s. In 1952 he started one of Canada's premier livestock sales, the Sale of Stars at the Toronto Royal Winter Fair. In the 1950s he established a well-known event during the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede, the Hays' Stampede Breakfast. In 1957 he sold the Turner Siding farm and bought a ranch near High River. There he crossbred Herefords, Holsteins and Brown Swiss to produce a new breed of cattle, the Hays Converter. He was mayor of Calgary, 1959-1963. He was elected to parliament as a Liberal in 1963 and served as Minister of Agriculture, 1963-1965. In 1966 he was appointed by the Liberals to the Senate, in which he sat until his death. He was inducted into the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame in 1983.
