John Walter Grant MacEwan, 1902-2000, was born in Brandon, Manitoba. He received agricultural degrees from the University of Toronto and Iowa State College, USA. He married Phyllis Cline in 1946 and they had one daughter, Heather. He was a professor at the University of Saskatchewan, 1928-1946, and Dean of Agriculture at the University of Manitoba, 1946-1951. He moved to Calgary in 1952 and became involved in politics. He was a city alderman, 1953-1958, and mayor, 1963-1965. He sat as a Liberal in the Alberta Legislature, 1955-1959, and served as Alberta's Lieutenant-Governor, 1966-1974. A well-known author, he has written over forty books about western Canadian history, and from 1956 to 1992 wrote a column for the Calgary Herald. Grant MacEwan School in Calgary and Grant MacEwan College in Edmonton are named in his honour. He received the Order of Canada in 1975. MacEwan: 2 photograph albums of 'Pioneer Agricultural Scenes' and 'Canadian Livestock'; 3 diaries kep by G. MacEwan, 1902-1931, 1931-1950, 1958-1968; 3 scrapbooks and 3 files containing research, notes and clippings relating to various issues of interest to MacEwan; the diary of Phyllis Cline, 1932-1953.
