Biographical history

Frederick F. Gillespie, 1856-1921, was born in Steathan, Dulwich, England and came to Calgary, Alberta in 1887 to work for the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC). His wife, Florence Frances Groves, 1858-1946, grew up in Australia and married Frederick in 1887. His family returned to England about 1892 but Frederick did not return until about 1895. In Calgary they attended the Anglican church where Florence played the organ. They had five children, Violet Shallcross, 1889- , Winnifred, Jack, Richard and Frances (Thompson).

Archival history

The photos were held first by Florence Gillespie, then her daughter, and finally by grandson Michael Thompson.

The fonds consists of the originals (2022.38) and typescripts of Florence Gillespie's diaries (1887-1890) and photographs of Calgary and along the line of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) which were taken by Cornelius J. Soule, Boorne and May and J. F. Cooke.
