Biografie
George Thirlby, 1888-1958, was born in the mining village of Whitwick, Leicestershire, England. In 1912 he emigrated to Canada and worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) on the construction of the Ogden Repair Shops near Calgary, Alberta. Upon the completion of the construction project he worked as an agricultural labourer near Shepard, Alberta. In 1916 he enlisted with the 8th Canadian Railway Troop, 211 Overseas Battalion and served as a sapper in France. He was demobilized in 1919 and returned to Calgary briefly, but eventually settled near his home village with his wife, Nellie Gibson, whom he married in 1918. They had two daughters, Jean (Morey) and Margaret (Rose).
