George Everett Learmonth, 1876-1957, was born and educated in Montreal and graduated from McGill in medicine in 1901. Following his graduation he served as a ship's doctor on various Liverpool-based lines as well as studying tropical diseases in West Africa. In 1903 he set up a practice in High River, Alberta, and in 1904 he was certified to practice physic, surgery and midwifery. During First World War, in 1916, he joined the Canadian Army Medical Corps. After service in England and France he returned to military medicine work in Calgary. On his discharge in 1919, Learmonth continued in private practice in Calgary.

He was a frequent contributor to the Canadian Medical Journal, was a member of the Calgary Medical Society and College of Physicians and Surgeons, as well as being a founding member of the Alberta Medical Association. Learmonth continued in practice until 1951. His parents were John and Susan (nee Smith) Learmonth. He married Margaret Moe in 1904, and they had three children, John, Charles and Janet (Tennant).

Histoire archivistique

The records were in the custody of Guy Boissonneault, who purchased the Learmonth house. He donated some of the records to Glenbow, and sold the rest to Tom Williams, a dealer, who subsequently sold them to Glenbow.

The fonds consists of medical case books (with confinements and clinical notes), professional and personal correspondence, articles, speeches, minutes, journals, books, notes, certificates, family history, diaries, student notebooks from McGill, tax records, ledgers, call lists, pamphlets, newsclippings, and a scrapbook. Also consists of photographs of family, friends, colleagues and of a medical case of gangrene.
