Biographical history

Canadian publisher and book collector George Ballentine Coutts was born in Thamesville, Ontario, in 1886. Educated at the University of Toronto. In 1910 moved to Calgary, Alberta, where with George Harley Vincent Burroughs he formed Burroughs and Company, publishers of legal material. After the company was sold to Carswell & Company in 1927, G.B. Coutts stayed on with the firm as Western Manager. President of the Ranchmen's Club, 1931-1933 and 1937-1949, he compiled and published a history of the Club in 1953. Married to Alberta Bastedo (1885-1961).

Donated by David and Katherine Coutts in 1982 and 1984, and in 2005 through Dr. Donald Smith.

Fonds consists of letters from family and friends; memorabilia; material relating to the Ranchmen's Club; diary, 1906-1913, written by Katherine Ballentine Coutts (1854-1929), G.B. Coutts's mother, in the same volume with text on legal matters which is in a different and unidentified hand, possibly that of John B. Coutts, G.B. Coutts's father; and letters and newsclippings removed from books donated to the University of Calgary Library from G.B. Coutts's book collection.
