Biographical history
Franz Hoelzlhuber (Franz Holzlhuber), 1826-1898, was born in Grundberg bei Styr, Austria. He worked as a law clerk and received some training in art and music. From 1856 to 1860, he lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, and travelled extensively through North America. Many of his sketches, paintings and watercolors were exhibited in Europe or published as illustrations. In later life he became director of the National Railroad Museum and was decorated with the Gold Merit Cross in Austria.

Scope and content
The fonds consists of two suites of short musical compositions intended to accompany travelling exhibitions of the composer's paintings. The suites were inspired by the composer's travels and were entitled "Reise nach Amerika" and "Reise in Amerika und England". The material is accompanied by programs for the shows, and extracts of journalistic reviews. Also includes commentaries of art dealers.
