Administrative history
The Calgary branch of the Comite national des francais libres, also known as the Free French Movement, was formed in Calgary, Alberta in 1940. It was part of a non-political international organization to give General de Gaulle all possible moral and material aid in his fight to free France and Belgium from Nazi domination during the Second World War. The Calgary group sponsored lectures, and held dances and other events to raise money for its cause. Prominent executive members were Mr. and Mrs. Baptiste Cayron, Andre Breitner and Auguste Bernard. A Blairmore branch was established in 1942.
