Administrative history
The Family Life Education Committee, established in Calgary, Alberta in 1966, originated out of a concern for the family in modern society. Its long-term objective is to promote the maximum growth of individuals to the benefit of society, through the understanding of human relationships as they are developed in the family. The original member agencies were the Pastoral Institute, Victorian Order of Nurses, Canadian Mental Health Association, City of Calgary Health Department, Catholic Family Service and Calgary Family Service. It soon expanded to include YMCA, YWCA, Jewish Family Service, Canadian Conference on Children, Canadian Conference on Aging, Home Economics Association, Calgary Association for Responsible Parenthood and Calgary Medical Association. In 1967 FLEC became part of the Social Planning Council. The committee coordinates the programs of member agencies, assists in the development of family life education programs, maintains an inventory of resources and assists in leadership training. The committee was dissolved in 1999.
