Biographical history

The School of Social Welfare was formed in 1966. The School became the Faculty of Social Welfare in 1975. The Edmonton and Lethbridge Divisions were established in 1975 and 1982 respectively. In 1990, the name changed to the Faculty of Social Work. The Access Divison was funded in 1999 by Alberta Learning to deliver a BSW to rural, remote and Aboriginal communities in the province. The Divisions were renamed the Central and Northern Alberta Region and the Southern Region of the Faculty of Social Work. In 2001, the Faculty launched the Centre for Social Work Research and Development to promote and support excellence in social welfare and social work research and development throughout Alberta, as well as at national and international levels.

The Faculty of Social Work at the University of Calgary is one of the largest in Canada. It provides social work education at the baccalaureate and graduate levels to the degrees of BSW, MSW, and PhD. Projects of the Faculty include: Children's Mental Health Project; Elder Friendly Communities Project; Chinese seniors project; ISDU (International Social Development Unit); Canadian Society for Spirituality and Social Work; making sense of partnerships in nonprofit child and family service organizations; and diversity among the homeless and those at risk.

Fonds consists of Faculty of Social Work administrative records, annual reports, newsletters, pamphlets, course outlines, an evaluation report on the Faculty of Social Welfare (1976), and annual reports of the Centre for Social Work Research and Development.
