Administrative history

The Esther Honens International Piano Competition and Festival of the Piano is held in Calgary, Alberta every four years. The first competition was held in November 1992. The competition is administered by the Esther Honens International Piano Competition Foundation, incorporated on May 29, 1991. It was endowed with a $5,000,000 gift from Esther Honens, 1903-1992, an accomplished amateur pianist. Born Esther Lorraine Smith in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, she moved to Calgary in 1908. She was an employee of the jewelry firm Birks for 25 years, and in 1955 she married Jack Hillier, a real estate developer who died in 1970. In 1974 she married Harold Honens, a rancher. A series of successful investments in real estate enabled the endowment of the Piano Competition. Esther Honens lived to see her wish fulfilled, and died on December 3, 1992. For further information see "Esther Honens" in Women Who Give Away Millions : Portraits of Canadian Philanthropists / Iris Nowell. -- Toronto, Hounslow Press, 1996, p. 91-108.
