Biographical history
Edward Joseph Garland, 1886-1974, was born in Dublin, Ireland and attended Belvidera College and Dublin University. He came to Canada in 1909 and farmed at Rowley, Alberta. He was an executive member of the United Farmers of Alberta (UFA), 1919-1921, and was elected to the House of Commons in 1921 as Member of Parliament for the Bow River constituency, a position he held until 1935. In 1920 he was appointed secretary to the High Commissioner of Canada in Dublin; Acting High Commissioner for Canada to Ireland in 1946; Charges d'Affaires for Canada to Denmark; ambassador to Norway in 1947; and ambassador to Iceland in 1949. He retired to Cranbrook, British Columbia. He married Alfrieda Williams Ryning in 1916 and they had three children, Ruth (Williams), John Edward and David Patrick.

The fonds consists of political speeches, political posters, correspondence, letters regarding his time in Ireland and Norway, booklets, newspaper clippings, cartoons, a photo portrait and other records. Includes letters from J. S. Woodsworth, John S. Ewart, and W.L. Mackenzie King.
