Dr. Evelina Orteza y Miranda was born in Butuan, Philippines. She received her education from the University of Philippines (BsC in Education, 1952), Case-Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio (MA in Education, 1956) and her doctorate in Philosophy of Education from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1967.
Orteza’s teaching roles included secondary school teacher in the Philippines, research assistant at the University of California, Los Angeles, and lecturer and later assistant professor at the University of Regina. She moved to the University of Calgary in 1969 and taught in the Faculty of Education until her retirement in 1995 when she was granted Professor Emerita status. During some summer sessions, she had the opportunity to teach at the University of Lethbridge in Alberta, University of Regina, in Saskatchewan, and West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV. She was also a visiting professor at the University of Hawaii, and an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham England.
Orteza’s academic interests and expertise were wide ranging. They included the philosophy of education, existential philosophy, pragmatism and ethics, religious pluralism, morality and values. She was also very involved in leading discussions at bible studies and church gatherings. Orteza had a prolific publishing record, writing or contributing chapters to more than 15 books, and authored over 50 articles for both national and international journals.
Dr. Orteza died July 26, 2014.

Fonds consists of records that relate to Orteza’s teaching including course notes and course outlines, her publications including drafts and final copies of articles, manuscripts and chapters for books, speaking notes at conferences and seminars, and for her church presentations and bible studies. Series consists of lecture notes, course outlines, exam questions and outlines for assignments, and reference materials. Orteza specialized in teaching on ethical and philosophical aspects of education.
