Dr. Barry is Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of Calgary. He received his Bachelor of Arts from St. Francis Xavier University (1968), his Master of Arts from Dalhousie University (1971) and his Ph.D. in International Relations from the School of Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University (1977). He taught at Trent University from 1977-1978 before moving to Calgary in 1978 where he has remained a member of the Department of Political Science. He has also served as the Resident Historian, Department of External Affairs from 1985-1989. Dr. Barry's principle research interests are in Canadian foreign policy and International Relations. He has published widely on these topics including Canada-United States relations, Canada-European Union relations, history of Canadian foreign policy and external affairs, free trade, and cross-border security. He has also given testimony to Parliamentary committees including the Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries (1999), the Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs (1999), the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade (2002) and the Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs (2003).

Fonds consists of records that reflect Dr. Barry's research and scholarly interests into specific aspects of Canada's international relations including his research into the into specific aspects of Canada's international relations including the research that culminated in his book Icy Battleground: Canada, the International Fund for Animal Welfare, and the Seal Hunt, the relationship between Canada and the European Union regarding fishing practices, and research on Herbert Norman, a Canadian diplomat accused of communist activities by the United States in the 1950s.
