Biographical history

William Robert Curtis, 1876-1957, was born in London, England and came to Canada in 1891. He fought in the South African War. In 1904 he married Josephine Beaty Earl, 1881-1969, of Oakville, Ontario and they had two children, Mary Jeanne (Cody), 1922- , and William Robert, Jr., 1913-?. They moved to Alberta and began farming in the Hanna district in 1909. W.R. served overseas in First World War with the 187th Veterans' Battalion. He retired from farming in 1940. Mary Jeanne (later known as Jeanne) won a prize child contest sponsored by a Canadian magazine in 1929. She married Alan C. Cody of Calgary in 1948 and they had two children, Catherine and Bruce.

The fonds consists of biographical notes, certificates, greeting cards (one in "chip-carved" style) and newsclippings about the Curtis family and the prize child contest (1921-1962); photographs of W.R. Curtis and the 187th Battalion (1900-1918); Alan's newsclippings and manual for a model coach building contest (1932-1933), and miscellaneous Cody family photographs and certificate (1911-1977).
