Name of creator
Staples and Company Ltd. was established in 1905 by Otis Staples, a prominent lumberman from Wycliff, British Columbia, as a retail lumber outlet for the lumber mill he owned in the British Columbia interior. Staples was the first president and C.W. Rowley the vice-president. The first company building was at 10th Avenue and 9th Street SW, Calgary, Alberta and later the main office of the firm was in the Grain Exchange building. In its first year the company set up branches in Calgary, Olds, Bowden, High River, Innisfail, Okotoks and Stavely. By 1907 an office in Stettler oversaw the company's rural yards. The company name was changed to Crown Lumber Company in 1909, and in 1911 it became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Canadian Western Lumber Company. By 1912 the company had fifty- two retail yards in the west and two of these were in Calgary. Canadian Western was acquired by Crown Zellerbach Corporation of San Fransisco in 1953. The management of Crown Lumber Company for its first fifty years was in the hands of E.T. Chritchley, managing director, and his assistant, R.J. McLean. The company's head office was amalgamated with that of Security Lumber Company, a Saskatchewan subsidiary of Canadian Western Lumber Company, in 1956 and the new office was located in Moose Jaw. Crown Lumber bought out Security Lumber in 1958. The office moved again to Calgary in 1960, to Vancouver in 1973 and back to Calgary in 1979.
