Biographical history

Beginning in the 1980s an informal group of feminists in Calgary, Alberta began to lobby to change the name of Calgary "aldermen" to "councillors". The group became more formal in 2007 and in 2011 Calgary City Council changed the title to "councillor". For further information see the article by Mary Valentich, "Calgary's Resistance to Changing from "Alderman" to "Councillor" in Theory in Action, vol.2, no. 1, (January 2009), p. 66-85.
