Biographical history

Charles Edward Harris worked in the hardware and ship chandlery business in Halifax. He was married ca. 1878, and he and his wife had three children, Claude, Percy and Joyce. In 1882 a group of Halifax businessmen, including Charles, established the Halifax Ranching Company. The company, headed by J.E. Chipman, leased 40,000 hectares (100,000 acres) of land 13 km (8 miles) southeast of Pincher Creek, Alberta, from the Kootenay to Oldman rivers, for the purposes of a horse and cattle ranch. Charles was appointed ranch manager and he travelled west in 1882 to take up his position. The ranch was moved to a location on the Elbow River, just southwest of Calgary sometime before 1888, when the Robinsons bought it out. The Harris family stayed west until their son, Claude, moved to Ontario. By 1961 Charles' widow and daughter, Joyce, had returned to Calgary to retire.
