Administrative history
In 1924 Calgary's CFCN radio introduced a weekly program of old time waltzes, marches, polkas and other dance music, featuring a band called Cy, Ebenezer and the Kid. By 1927 the group was called Cy Hopkins and his Oldtime Band. The orchestra was soon known simply as the CFCN Old Timers. Hopkins was succeeded as leader by Roy Watts and, in 1940, by Tony Neidermayer. The radio show was originally broadcast live every Thursday night, but was later moved to Sunday night. The Old Timers also played for dances throughout southern Alberta. In the 1950s the radio show began to be recorded for later broadcast. The band recorded five albums between 1959 and 1971. The program was cancelled in 1982. Long-time band members included Tony Neidermayer (1909-1988) on accordion, George Fitzsimmons (1917-2009) on fiddle, Floyd Silito as vocalist, Ernie Yardley (1903-?) on guitar and Nan Tingle (?-1990) on piano. For further information see George Lyon's article, "The CFCN Old Timers" in Old Time Country, vol. 8, no. 4 (Winter 1993) and vol. 9, no. 1/2 (Spring/Summer 1993).
